Introduction

Every photographer wants to publish their work as books. But, books can be expensive, bulky, consume natural resources to produce, and are difficult to distribute. With the advancement of Acrobat PDF, photographers have a another way to share their work with others — a beautiful full-screen presentation, a true digital book format that is self-contained, and files that are easily distributed via the Internet.

Capparis Spinosa

While deployed to Iraq in 2006-2007 I was stationed on COB Spiecher in Tikrit on the old Iraqi Air Force Academy Air Base. We were housed in what we affectionately called the “crack houses”. On the way home from the chow hall i found these plants with a proliferation of these white flowers. The flowers would bloom and then dire at the end of the day. These plants seemed to exemplify the contrast that was the Iraq I saw – delicate beauty in the midst of great heat, the fragile white blossoms in the midst of long sharp thorns, beauty in a dangerous world.

Weston Beach

Weston Beach is a small section of the Point Lobos State Reserve, just south of Carmel California. On this particular trip I found a small section on Weston Beach that intrigued and captured my imagination and camera. I spent the better part of day in one area as the tide slowly went out and then started coming in. The images were not of the larger tide pools or even of the rock formations, but of the small pebbles, stones shaped like sand dunes, boulders worn smooth and glistening from the action of waves moving up and over the exposed surfaces.

Wild Cat Hill Nude Folio #1

What spirit is so empty and blind, that it cannot recognize the fact that the foot is more noble than the shoe, and skin is more beautiful than the garment with which it is clothed?” – Michelangelo

Graffito Folio #1

These images were made from graffiti or “tags” decorating the side of railroad cars. I was drawn to the images I saw left behind by the initial artists. Some were very colorful and others were monochromatic in nature, ranging from the very complex to simple line drawings. The images range from wonderful color prints to some very intricate black & white designs. These prints are a departure from the usual subject matter I have traditionally photographed. It was a fun and challenging project and allowed for great interpretation of the original “tags” I encountered. I hope you will enjoy them as well!
