SILVER GELATIN

Silver Gelatin Prints on the site are printed in one of two sizes, 8×10 or 11×14 inch prints. These images were exposed on film, processed in my darkroom and then printed in the same darkroom by me. They are not sent out to a commercial lab. Each image is printed on fiber based paper and then processed using archival procedures to ensure the longevity of the print. After the toning of the print it is mounted on museum rag board and then signed. On the back of each print is a stamp identifying the print title, year of the negative, the print date, and edition number. All of the prints at this time are open edition, meaning there is no set number of prints to be completed. The prints are mounted on 14×18 inch board for 8×10 prints and 16×20 inch for 11×14 prints.

PIGMENT ON PAPER

Digital images or Pigment On Paper images are printed on two sizes of paper depending on the size of the final image. I use either 8×10 paper for images no larger than approximately 5×7 inches and 11×14 inch paper for images no larger than approximately 8×10. This ensure there is room for a boarder on the image allowing for a signature, title, and information blocks detailing the edition, print number and copyright. All the prints I sell are digitally prepared, fine-tuned and printed by me personally, on my own Epson pigment printer — not by a commercial lab. Each image is printed using the latest archival inks and fine art inkjet papers. I use either Moab or Red River paper. These prints are left unmounted to allow for personal display preferences

DIGITAL SILVER

A final option for fine art prints is one that takes the digital image and prints it on silver paper. These images are printed on Ilford Express Digital RC paper using a Fuji Frontier laser printer. They are more expensive than the Pigment on Paper prints, but are less expensive than the Silver Fiber Based prints. This process is available only for the digital images. They do not have a title or copyright information as the digital prints above and are not mounted on museum board.

Adumbratio Chapbooks

What is a chapbook? It’s a pamphlet, usually paper-bound and center-stapled or hand stitched, containing a small, self-contained body of work by the artist. It’s frequently used by poets for publishing a group of poems and by writers for individual short stories. For me and other visual artists it’s a nice way to present a modest selection of photographs.

The etymology of the Chapbook is interesting. Chapbooks were so called because they were sold by peddlers known as chapmen. Chap comes from the Old English for trade, so a chapman was literally a dealer who sold books.  It’s very old: the original form—”cyp”—goes back to the ninth century.

Another derivation from cyp became “cheap,” as in a good deal or a bargain. That fits chapbooks to a T. Producing a full-blown book of work will typically consume hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars. A chapbook can be created with a few hours work and self-produced for a few dollars a copy. Such a deal!

The chapbook has allowed me to use the camera to essentially produce a series of “sketches” of projects or related images and print them in a small hand made book. The chapbook carries the title “adumbratio”, which is latin for sketches.

Books & E-Books

One of the many ways to get work out to a wider audience in an easy to distribute and cost effective manner is the Ebook or electronic file formats. These books contain all of the information in the hard copy books or more, as the electronic files allow for other information to be added that cannot be found on the printed page.

By The Tigris

After 10 years I have finally completed compiling the images from my deployment to Iraq in 2006 – 2007. This was a very tough time for soldiers deployed as there was an upsurge in violence while I was deployed there. The book documents my time there with photographs and commentaries.

The softbound edition is available at Blurb  for  those who like holding a book in their hands and prefer to experience the tactile sensation of reading.
